AirPlay Mirroring: A First Look
I’ve written multiple times about how much I was looking forward to AirPlay mirroring on the iPhone 4S (and iPad 2). I got a new Apple TV from the Apple Store last week, which strangely not have the latest firmware, and performed an upgrade. So, now that you have an Apple TV and an iPad 2 running iOS 5.0 or an iPhone 4S…now what? I Google’d around a bit and didn’t see anything well written so I figured I’d help out.
To use AirPlay, from the home screen double tap the home button to bring up the application bar.

Then swipe left twice, past the iPod to where the volume bar is. Here you should see an up arrow on the bottom right of your screen.

From there, click the Apple TV and turn on mirroring. Easy peasy!

Here’s a few shots of my TV streaming directly from my iPhone.

Overall, I’m very pleased with the quality of this feature. In classic Jobs mantra, ‘it just works’. The dimensions are just a tiny bit off on the width of the screen but the picture looks stunning, including new 1080 HD movies I’ve recorded from my phone.
If this didn’t work for you, there’s a few things to check. First off, your Apple TV software has to be up to date. You can update by either plugging in your Apple TV to your computer and updating with iTunes (you’ll need a micro USB cable which does not come with the Apple TV) or, you can upgrade from the menu directly.
Next, make sure you’re using an iPad 2 (with the latest iOS 5.0 upgrade) or an iPhone 4S. Also make sure your devices are on the same network your Apple TV is connected to.
Any questions or can’t seem to make it work, let me know! Happy to help.
